uk.adverts.computer FAQ Version 1.08 28/04/2003
=====================================================================

This is Part 1 of the FAQ for the uk.adverts.computer newsgroup.

The complete FAQ has three sections:

Part 1: Summary: read this if you read nothing else
Part 2: Basic Administration of the group
Part 3: The frequently-asked questions and their answers

The full text of the FAQ is available at

http://www.lawshouse.org/uac/uacfaq.txt (Who's computer is this?)

In the hopes of increasing its visibility and making it easier for
people to read it I shall post only extracts of the FAQ, leaving the
full text on the web page:

Part 1 weekly,
Parts 1 and 2 together monthly

============================================================

This bit sounds pompous, dictatorial and unhelpful, I know. Bear with
me: I can't summarise without it sounding like that.

* Post only sales and wanted advertisements for computer equipment
and related items for sale in the UK.

* Do not post help requests; when they appear do not post replies
to them (flames or otherwise) but be helpful by mail if you wish.

* Post in text only; if you quote material trim what you quote and
post your new text after it, not before.

* Do not cross-post an article to other groups as well as
uk.adverts.computer.

Here is a list of other groups where help requests are appropriate:

For auction related queries/concerns/thoughts/help(not ads):
uk.people.consumers.ebay (this is for all online auctions, not just
ebay)

For general questions (hardware, software, performance ...)
uk.comp.misc

For general hardware questions:
alt.comp.hardware
alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt
alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt
comp.periphs
uk.comp.homebuilt
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.misc

For more specific device installation and configuration questions
uk.comp.peripherals.misc (All peripherals)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage (Hard disks)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video (Screens, graphic cards)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.soundcard.misc (Soundcards general)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.chips (Memory, CPUs, Mobo's)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.cd-rom (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM)
comp.sys.laptops (Guess what for?)
uk.comp.sys.laptops

For questions on specific motherboards try the appropriate one of
the alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.* set. There are specific groups
for ASUS, Chaintech, Epox, FIC, Gigabyte ... all the usual lot.

For general software and operating system questions
uk.comp.os.win95
uk.comp.os.win2000
microsoft.public.windowsme.general
microsoft.public.windowsme.setup
microsoft.public.win95.general.discussion
microsoft.public.win95.setup
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
microsoft.public.win98.setup
microsoft.public.windows2000.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

For networking questions (including Direct Cable Connection)
microsoft.public.win95.networking
microsoft.public.win98.networking
uk.comp.home-networking
microsoft.public.windowsme.internet

For questions about Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie5.setup

For discussions on news readers
news.software.readers

For price comparisons in the UK don't look for a group but go
to http://www.pricewatch.co.uk/ (Who's computer is this?)

Now please read the rest: there are justifications for the dictatorial
stuff above, pointers to sources of technical help and lots of other
help!
