Generally you need an idea of how much power you want the generator
to deliver. There are tables called "usage guides" that give a
general idea of how much power typical household items require. Links
to two such guides are given below:

We could reasonably expect to use a 4.5 kw generator.

From Eric Miller
I have a 5000 watt Honda. I sized it so I can run 3-4 computers,
lights, the blower fan for the central heat and the fridge off it.
My wife and I both work at home, and the prospect of missing a
deadline because of a prolonged power outage loomed large in the
decision to get a big honking generator.

2500 is enough if you're just running the fridge and a laptop.

From Roy
My first generator was a Honda 3300W, with quiet housing
and electric starting. I left it behind with the Aptos house:
outages there were from eucalyptus branches, sudden and brief.
In a decade, the generator logged over a hundred very useful hours.

Now, in the flatlands, with simpler demands, the generator in
the garage is Honda 2500W, no electric start, no quieting.
I have total confidence that it will start at the second pull
of the rope.

For readers who may be pondering a decision about a generator,
let me suggest that to buy anything but a Honda may be placing
too low a value on your time, and putting wholly avoidable stress
on your resilience under adversity

From Andrew Knutsen
When I was shopping last year, I bought a Coleman 3KW with a
Tecumsa (sp?) OHV motor. It cost $377 at Home Depot.
Our theory is that Coleman is/was trying to improve their
reputation, and is/was selling this model at discount. Its only
problem, so far, is that the gas tank is miniscule
(maybe thats why its so cheap); needs filling every hour
(or a siphon arrangement).

Suicide cables can injure you, your people and the brave souls
at PG&E who are trying to restore your power!

A suicide cable is an extension cord with a (male) plug at both ends.
You plug one end of the cable into the generator and the other end
into a plug in your house.

Simple, no?

It is left as an exercise
to the reader to match voltages (240 into 120 don't work so good...),
appropriate currents, (Don't use a 10 amp rated cord for a
4.5 kw generator) and phases (you may need both sides...). If this
doesn't mean anything to you, better pay a professional.

Not so fast
Before doing this, you need to go to your circuit breaker box
and turn off your main breakers. If you don't do this, your
generator will feed power into the PG&E lines.
“No big deal” thinkest thou?
BIG DEAL the 10,000 volt step-down
transformers work BOTH ways. There will be some poor PG&E
schmoe working out in the cold, wet weather to get YOUR power on
who will find power on a line that is supposed to be cold.

If after reading these warnings you still choose to use a suicide
cord, please be diligent about the breakers, eh? And remember to
turn them back on when your neighbor tells you the power is back.

Look, the prices marked at the Honda places are not the price

I ended up paying ... I dunno, about $800 for it.
