ACADIA.CHAT CHARTER AND FAQ

Created on October 7th, 1997
Last revised on April 11th, 1998

======================================================================
=
This FAQ is provided as a public service to all newcomers to
Acadia.chat,
a.k.a., AC.

It will be posted to the newsgroup no less than once a month.
======================================================================
==
Creed:
^^^^^^
"We are all sowers of seed. What we sow and how we sow it can bring
great harvests.
Seeds of kindness, compassion, and understanding, planted in fertile
soil, can grow into lifetime friendships, great deed, and memories
that
neverfade.
Acadia.chat is a place where such friendships grow and blossom. A
place
where friends meet friends, unseen and yet still cherished. A place
for
caring and for sharing, for giving and receiving. A place to
feel at home."
======================================================================
==
Charter:
^^^^^^^^
The group acadia.chat is for the discussion of just about anything.
It includes but is not limited to:

Anything
to
Nothing...

...as they relate to the pursuit of general babble.

Money-making schemes, advertising, etc. are not appropriate in this
group.
Spammers and sleazoids be forewarned!
======================================================================
==
Posting to the group:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Posts to AC are to follow the lines of the charter. While group
participants are encouraged to join in, everyone is expected to
maintain a certain amount of etiquette and decorum. Profane language
should be avoided as there are young readers, old readers and God-
fearing readers on AC.

Postings must remain "on topic" if at all possible.

Commercial postings are generally not permitted except under strict
guidelines. At the end this section there is a URL for USENET
commercial
posting guidelines entitled, "Advertising on USENET: How to do it;
How
not to do it".

These guidelines are rather lengthy, so a summary of the USENET and
newsgroup restrictions as relates to AC are as follows:

1. Commercial posts are not welcomed or wanted! All are reported to
ISP's as the SPAM that they are.

2. Scams are not welcomed or wanted! Again, all will reported as
SPAM.

3. Sleaze is not tolerated!
THIS will also be reported immediately.So-- if you are thinking of
posting it here, yet value your internet account, better think
again.

4. Crossposting is a big no-no!

5. Posts to AC, whether commercial or not, should not contain HTML
or
binary information. Pictures or banners in the form of jpg's,
jpeg's, gif's, avi's, mpg's, etc., are binaries which are not
approved on AC.

You may, however, include a URL link to your web site or
home page-- provided the posting meets all of the other criteria
listed in these rules.

6. Posts with even a short advertising message should not be made
more than once per month. Additionally, multiple cross-posted
advertising messages to more than four newsgroups will not be
permitted.

7. Violators will receive NO warning by email -- instead, their
ISP's
will be notified immediately and asked to take appropriate
actions.
This goes for BOTH regular spam and sleaze postings
alike--Acadia.chat
means business about this, so if you have any intentions of
posting
spam or sex-sleaze here, THINK AGAIN.

8. Letting people know about your Home Page should only be
done as part of a Signature File and may include the URL.

For more information about newsgroups and proper posting see:

FAQ about Acadia.Chat:

1. Q: Where should I post - top or bottom?
A: Please post at the bottom in order to maintain continuity.

2. Q: Is there a right procedure when replying?
A: You should snip (remove) as much of the previous postings as
possible, in order to save bandwith.

3. Q: Why does my text sometimes turn everything else black?
A: If you type on a line with a red cursor, you will turn all the
text black. If typing inbetween text - always press enter to
create a line of clear space for yourself.

4. Q: How can I keep my signature with my article?
A: Type a simple signature under the article and above the
signature
line.

5. Q. Where does Acadia originate?
A. Acadia University is located in Nova Scotia, Canada. The
students
there created a couple of newsgroups (such as acadia.chat and
???acadia.bulletin???) for general announcements and chat for
students and alumni. There was much commotion from around the
world, though, and so the students abandoned acadia.chat for a
newsgroup that only the students there have access to. Since
then, other people world wide have made acadia.chat what it is
today!

6. Q. How do I post on acadia.chat?
A. Keep doing what you're doing.

7. Q. Is this a "chat-room"?
A. No, this is a newsgroup.

8. Q. Can I write private email to other group members?
A. Of course.

9. Q. What tone of voice can I read this in?
A. Try them all.

10. Q. Is it ok to YELL in my posts?
A. Please don't. No one here is hard of reading.

Six Special Acadia Guidelines regarding SPAM - and Sleaze mail.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
1. Remember that bulk email programmes are always searching for
addresses.
2. Never reply with the word "remove". That confirms your address.
Just
delete the letter.

3. Do not pass a pyramid or chain letter on. Someone could return it
to
you with a virus.

4. If you don't want these adverts, change your "reply to" address
to a
false one. If you wish humans to be able to figure the real
address
out - put "x" after the @ sign, or the words NOSPAM, or anything
obvious. Don't be afraid to explain how to get the real address
in
your posting or signature, the automatic spambots usually read
only
headers.

5. Spam on the newsgroup is efficiently chased up by Romath, and
others.
If we reply, the chain continues longer than ignoring and letting
it
expire naturally.

6. Don't let it bother you.

To report Spam or sex-sleaze
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Copy the article plus the headers and send to one of the addresses
below

1. Rom...@usa.net

2. alt.spam

3. antis...@onelist.com.

4. No-Sle...@onelist.com
