Usenet Replayer's directory service FAQ

Introduction and History

I was using the usenet for long time with modem transport. No local news server. This is the reading mode of the big majority. As a result from this experience I have decide to sponsor a service to improve the situation of such people. All these services are free of charge. http://www.usenet-replayer.com point to the www part of this services. The rating of the users is very positiv. Look here. A other function resulting from this development is the Directory service posted within the usegroups.

What is the directory service within newsgroups?

If you are reading a binary newsgroup, you have the problem, that it is very slow if you download the pictures with nntp. The reason for this is, binary data are encoded 4:3 as Text. There is no function, who implements the possibility to pre look the content of the binary groups without loading all data. There is An additional problem. The netscape software loads the whole messages again if you adapt the window size to a picture.

To solve this situation, we have created the binary directory service. Every object that is added to the open part of the archive of http://www.usenet-replayer.com/archive.html is also queued to the directory generation. If 15 objects are found, a new page of directory service is created. If there was no message posted in the last 3 days, a non html version is posted as supercedes to the newsgroup.

Why there are only 15 Pictures per message?

This is a result from analysis of the logfile from the http server that is used to build this service. We found, that some older computers with windows 3.11 have problems with the RAM storage. If a directory message contains more objects, they crashed

Why is now no html used?

A lot of people uses software with restrictet feature sets. I order to build a service for all useres, we have build a non html service. If you want to use the html version, you can use directory service as startpage.

Why is the html version better?

A bigger number of binary objects are cross-posted to a lot of groups. If people read the directory from more than one group, then the cross-posted directory pictures are transported only one time.

Also is the transport more effective. The NNTP (Network News Transport Protocol) transports the pictures encoded 4:3 as text. The HTTP Protocol transports the pictures as binary Files.

What is the advantage for online users?

I have analysed the logfile of the http server in the background of this service. Readers of the directory messages are clicking in mean on 0.6 objects per directory message.

The size of the message is in mean 34 KByte. This are 5 seconds on modern modems. The content of the postings are also optimized for transport. The mean size of a picture is 97 KB. Encoded as text this are 130 KByte. Do download the content the users intreresst occupies in mean 130 * 0.6 = 78 KByte. The result of this calculation is: a user needs in mean 34+78=112 KByte to get his interests from 15 messages .

And now the conventional way: To get a visual overview you need the content from the 15 messages. Because of 4:3 Text coding, every object needs 97*4/3 = 129KByte. The 15 messages need 15*129 = 1940 KByte of traffic.

All user can save 94% of download time and costs.

Are there user that have a disadvantage?

No! The subject of the mesages informs the user what he can expect to the message.

How can i filter the directory service?

The sender "nobody@usenet-replayer.de" is only used for the directory service. The messages ids can be also used if they fit the following real expression: "^<aa\..*@usenet-replayer\.de>$"

How much are resources needed for the directory service?

There are 34 KByte needed via nntp to catalog in mean 1940 KByte. "What is the advantage ...?" contains the calculation. This is 1.75%. In groups with high traffic, the effectivity is better because of the limitation to one message every 3 days. On the other hand the reader traffic is reduced.

The messages are linked by supercedes. Every group contains one message. Now are 229 Groups supported. 229 x 34 kByte = 7.8 MByte are used on storage.

Why directory service is no spam?

The Url http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/spam-faq/ for example contains the following text explaining spam:

Excessive Multi-Posting (EMP) has the same meaning as the term "spam" usually carries, but it is more accurate and self-explanatory. EMP means, essentially, "too many separate copies of a substantively identical article."

"Substantively identical" means that the material in each article is sufficiently similar to construe the same message. The signature is included in the determination. These are examples of substantively identical articles:

  • byte-for-byte identical messages.
  • otherwise identical postings minimally customized for each group it appears in.
  • advertising the same service.
  • articles that consist solely of the same signature.
  • articles which consist of inclusions of other user's postings, but are otherwise identical.

The directory service does not fit these definitions, because the messages are part of a service. Each message has unique contents. And each message supplies an important advantage to a majority of the user.

What objects are listed in directory?

Every binary object that was never posted before. Contents illigal at the federal republic of germany are blocked.

How can i protect my messages from directory?

If you don't want your posting added to this directory messages and the archive of usenet-replayer, please use the

"X-No-Archive: yes"

header line. If you dont have software able to put this line in the header, you can put it alternativly in the text part of the body of your message.

How can I find older messages?

Search in a bigger context with the archive of usenet-replayer.

Somebody else has published my copyright protected stuff. What can i do?

Please send a e-mail to the copyright agent and describe your problem. The copyright agent will remove your stuff from archive and directory. The sender of the message will be blocked from usenet-replayers services.

I have a problem! Who answers?

You can send any question to the system operator.
